Fast and secure transmission with high-frequency cables from CiS

High frequency cable

High-frequency cable for fast transmission in the highest quality

Cable assembly of a high-frequency cable

A high-frequency cable is a special cable designed for the transmission of high-frequency signals. It is used, for example, in telecommunications, medical technology or high-frequency technology. The frequency can range from a few megahertz to several gigahertz. High-frequency cables are designed to transport signals safely over long distances with minimal losses and interference. When assembling high-frequency cables, particular attention must be paid to the processing of the cable shield. This usually consists of a metal strip (aluminum), a braided shield or a combination of both. Depending on the complexity and series size, processing is carried out manually or fully automatically at CiS.

Twisted pair high frequency cable

The data cables with twisted pairs of different categories that are widely used in today's data networks are also high-frequency cables. With this technology, unshielded or shielded RJ45 connectors are the most widespread.

Twinax cable:

One innovation is the Twinax cable developed by the manufacturer 3M and processed by CiS. This utilises the advantages of a flat cable structure for the transmission of HF signals. CiS is one of the few cable assembly companies in the world that is technologically capable of processing such innovative cables.

Pre-assembled high-frequency cables (HF cables) are used in all systems that transmit high-frequency, analogue and digital signals. Applications include, for example, measurement technology systems, material analysis, data, mobile phone, TV and radio transmission. Industries include the automotive sector, medical technology, data technology, telecommunications as well as aviation, aerospace and defence technology.

How is a high-frequency cable constructed?

    Signal-carrying inner conductor

    Signal-carrying inner conductor

The conductor usually consists of copper wire or a multi-core stranded wire. The advantage of a single wire is the higher electrical load capacity of the cable and the better attenuation. In contrast, the multi-core stranded wire has the characteristic of significantly greater flexibility.

    Dielectric

    Dielectric

The dielectric forms the non-conductive substance of a high-frequency cable and influences the high-frequency properties during transmission. Special care is required during processing in order not to impair the transmission properties such as characteristic impedance, line attenuation and reflection attenuation. The dielectric consists of different materials: A dielectric made of polyethylene (PE) is mainly used for applications at high temperatures. A low attenuation of the cable is also achieved. If polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is used as the material for the dielectric, a lower density is achieved.

    Shielding

    Shielding

The shielding is also referred to as the outer conductor and consists of foil or braided shielding. Depending on the material, different frequency ranges or shielding attenuations are achieved. A combination of foil and braid shielding is also possible in the manufacture of high-frequency cables.

    Cable sheath

    Cable sheath

The cable sheath provides mechanical protection for high-frequency cables. Flexible solutions are particularly in demand here, as well as resistance to chemicals or extreme temperatures and fire protection requirements.
