Fast and Reliable Transmission with High-Frequency Cables from CiS

High Frequency Cable

High-Frequency Cables for Fast, High-Quality Transmission

Cable assembly of a high-frequency cable

A high-frequency cable is a special cable that is designed for the transmission of high-frequency signals. It is used, for example, in telecommunications, medical technology or high-frequency technology. The frequency can range from 3MHz to 30MHz. High-frequency cables are designed to transport signals safely over long distances with minimal losses and interference. When assembling high-frequency cables, particular attention must be paid to the processing of the cable shield. This usually consists of a metal strip (aluminum), a braided shield or a combination of both. Depending on the complexity and series size, processing is carried out manually or fully automatically at CiS.

Twisted-Pair High-Frequency Cable

Data cables with twisted pairs of various categories, widely used in today’s data networks, are also considered high-frequency cables. In this technology, unshielded and shielded RJ45 connectors are the most commonly used.

Twinax Cable

One innovation is the Twinax cable, developed by the manufacturer 3M and processed by CiS. It utilizes the advantages of a flat cable structure for transmitting high-frequency (HF) signals. CiS is one of the few cable assembly companies worldwide capable of processing such innovative cables.

Pre-assembled high-frequency cables (HF cables) are used in all systems that transmit high-frequency, analogue and digital signals. Applications include, for example, measurement technology systems, material analysis, data, mobile phone, TV and radio transmission. Industries include the automotive sector, medical technology, data technology, telecommunications as well as aviation, aerospace and defence technology.

How Is a High-Frequency Cable Constructed?

    Signal-Carrying Inner Conductor

    Signal-Carrying Inner Conductor

The conductor typically consists of a solid copper wire or a multi-stranded wire. A solid wire offers higher electrical load capacity and better signal attenuation characteristics. In contrast, a multi-stranded wire provides significantly greater flexibility.

    Dielectric

    Dielectric

The dielectric is the non-conductive material in a high-frequency cable and significantly influences its transmission properties. Special care must be taken during processing to avoid impairing transmission properties such as characteristic impedance, line attenuation, and return loss. Dielectrics are made from various materials. Polyethylene (PE), for example, is mainly used in applications involving high temperatures. It also provides low signal attenuation. When polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is used as the dielectric material, a lower material density is achieved.

    Shielding

    Shielding

The shielding, also known as the outer conductor, consists of foil, braided shielding, or a combination of both. Depending on the material, different frequency ranges and shielding effectiveness can be achieved. A combination of foil and braided shielding is commonly used in the manufacture of high-frequency cables.

    Cable Sheath

    Cable Sheath

The cable sheath provides mechanical protection for high-frequency cables. Flexible solutions are particularly in demand, along with resistance to chemicals, extreme temperatures, and compliance with fire protection requirements.
