Round cables have a multi-core circular structure and are usually available by the metre. The individual cores are located around the centre and are bundled in a cable sheath. Depending on the application, the cable core consists of stranded wires, dummy elements, shielding, taping or strain relief. The outer cable sheath is usually made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP) or fluoroethylene propylene (FEP) and protects the inner workings of the cable.
Round cables are particularly popular components in industry, as they offer high resistance to solvents, oil, lubricants, and acids. In a round cable, several individual conductors are combined into a single structure to transmit energy and various signals. This structure simplifies system installation, as there is no fixed mechanical orientation required. This offers a clear advantage of round cables over other cable types, such as flat ribbon cables.

In contrast to the production of stranded conductors, the complex structure of round cables makes complete automation very costly or even impossible. Only the cutting to length can be fully automated, even in the round version. This makes an automated solution rather uneconomical compared to manual or semi-automatic processing for small and medium-sized quantities.
