With our stranded wires,
you are not only connecting cables, but also quality and reliability!

Stranded wires

Stranded wires are fine, flexible wire bundles that consist of several thin individual wires and are often used to manufacture electrical cables, lines and connecting elements. Find out more about the special features of stranded wires.

Stranded wires for cable assembly

In electrical engineering, the term stranded wire refers to an electrical conductor that consists of thin individual wires and is therefore easily bendable. Copper is predominantly used as the conductor material. Stranded wires can be divided into flexible and highly flexible strands. A stranded wire consists of individual, sometimes up to hundreds of thin copper wires. A 1.5 mm² H07V-K stranded wire is made up of 30 x 0.25 mm individual strands that are twisted into a bundle. A plastic sheath is used to combine the bundle of individual wires and also acts as insulation for the copper strand.

The structure of a stranded wire is defined by standards. One of these standards is IEC 60228/VDE 0295. The plastic sheath is made of different materials depending on the area of application. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is used as standard for an H07V-K stranded wire. Depending on the cross-section, the finished stranded wire can then be used for both signal and power transmission.

The advantage of stranded wires over conventional copper wire is that they are much more flexible and bendable. This is due to the composition of many fine wires. Compared to solid wire conductors, the risk of conductor breakage is much lower with stranded conductors. Such breakage can occur, for example, due to mechanical stress caused by vibration or bending. Stranded conductors are therefore preferred for the electrical connection of moving components, e.g. in vibrating areas such as doors, trunk lids or robots.

Stranded wires are used as electrical connections in vehicles, in mechanical engineering, in vending machines and in medical technology for ventilators or MRI devices. Stranded wires are also used in control engineering for control cabinet wiring and in renewable energies. We will be happy to advise you and provide you with customised stranded wire variants. All copper cables are available in the required length in metres and in various colours.

Production of assembled stranded wires with semi- or fully automated processes

The assembly of stranded wires is the simplest form of cable assembly. Assembly refers to the processing of the ends of a strand cut to length, which is usually carried out in the following steps:

  • Removing the insulation from the strand ends
  • Soldering/crimping electrical contacts to the strand ends on one or both sides

  • Screwing into screw terminals

There are also other connection techniques for electrical contacts on stranded wire ends, such as crimping, insulation displacement technology, screw clamping technology, ultrasonic welding or dip tinning. These processes can be carried out manually with hand pliers or semi-automatically or fully automatically, whereby the number of pieces plays a decisive role.
