A connector is an electromechanical device that establishes an electrical connection between two electronic components. This ensures that performance is not compromised and signals are transmitted reliably. Connectors are essential across a wide range of industries and for the manufacture of countless products.
The majority of connectors can be divided into two categories: male and female connectors. The male part is also known as the ‘pin’ or ‘plug’ and is connected to the female energised part. The female part of a connector is called a ‘coupling’ if it is the end of a cable. The term ‘socket’ is also used if it is an integral part of an electronic device. For non-compatible connectors, an adapter is used to enable the connection. To create a permanent connection, the connector can be permanently installed. It is also possible to install and remove the connection as required. This is referred to as a detachable or separable connection.
