So, what exactly are high-voltage cables? A high-voltage system refers to one that operates with AC voltages above 30 V up to 1 kV or DC voltages above 60 V up to 1.5 kV.

A ‘high-voltage battery’ (400 V to 800 V) also known as a “high-voltage storage battery,” is an electrical energy source used in both mobile and stationary applications.

High-voltage cables are made up of multiple layers, each essential to their functionality. The outermost layer is an insulating sheath that protects the cable from moisture, dust, and other environmental factors.

Beneath it lies a shielding layer that reduces electromagnetic interference and helps stabilize current flow. At the core is the actual conductor, typically made of copper or aluminum, which transmits the electrical current. Depending on the application, multiple conductors may be integrated into a single cable.

Der wesentliche Unterschied zwischen einem Hochvoltkabel und einem Niedervoltkabel ist der Anwendungsbereich (Fahrzeugtechnik) sowie die Spannung, welche anliegt. Hochvoltkabel sind für den Spannungsbereich ab 60 V DC bis maximal 1,25 kV DC entwickelt worden, während Niedervoltkabel nur Spannungen im Bereich von ≤ 50 V AC und ≤ 120 V DC bereitstellen. Dadurch gibt es bei Hochvoltkabeln spezifizierte Sicherheitsvorschriften welche eingehalten werden müssen.

High-voltage cables are primarily used in electric and hybrid vehicles. There, they transmit electrical current between components. Beyond their use in electric and hybrid vehicles, high-voltage cables are also employed in energy systems and industrial applications. For example, they are used to transmit both direct and alternating current. They are also integral to fuel cells, high-voltage batteries, and electrified vehicle systems, ensuring efficient energy transmission.

HV cables are used wherever vehicles require electrical propulsion, including:

  • Hybrid and electric vehicles
