Customised, complex wire harness production
A wiring harness, also known as a cable set, is a prefabricated bundle of cables. Individual cables, such as working currents or signals, are combined in a harness and connected to each other using cable ties, clamps, hoses or binding twine. Cable harnesses are complex cable assemblies, which in turn are made up of the individual fittings described above.
In addition to cables, wires, contacts and matching connectors, other assemblies are often important components of a cable harness. These include electronic circuits, sensors, switches and electromechanical components. Strands, wires, high-frequency cables (coaxial cables) and high-voltage cables are also accommodated in the cable harness if required.
Wire harnesses are made from individual optical or electrical conductors. These are insulated, bundled and preformed to fit.
They are then combined with each other using plug connections and cable protection. Although modern machines, tools,
technologies and software are used in the design phases, actual production is usually carried out manually.
This is due to the large number of possible variants.
The respective cables are manually brought together on
a nailing board to form a cable harness. In order to be able to produce such complex structures efficiently in
series, auxiliary constructions such as laying boards or sample assemblies are necessary. The manual production
of wire harnesses involves the correct alignment of the cables or wires and the precise connection of all components involved.
Even if wire harness production is manual, only a short processing time is required for assembly.
The development of wire harnesses requires a great deal of detailed work and precision, as the subsequent replacement of a cable/line is difficult to realise. However, wire harnesses offer great economic benefits compared to individual cables. The clear grouping of cables avoids installation errors right from the start. Another advantage is the small installation volume of a wire harness, which leaves more space for other components. In addition to saving time and space, a wire harness also offers additional protection against vibrations.
