A connector is an electromechanical device that establishes an electrical connection between two electronic components. This ensures that performance is not impaired and that signals can be transmitted without any problems. A large number of connectors are required in a wide variety of industries and for the manufacture of countless products.

The majority of connectors can be divided into two categories: male and female connectors. The male part is also known as the ‘pin’ or ‘plug’ and is connected to the female energised part. The female part of a connector is called a ‘coupling’ if it is the end of a cable. The term ‘socket’ is also used if it is an integral part of an electronic device. For non-compatible connectors, an adapter is used to enable the connection. To create a permanent connection, the connector can be permanently installed. It is also possible to install and remove the connection as required. This is referred to as a detachable or separable connection.

Depending on the area of application, different requirements are placed on connectors. Depending on the type of signals that need to be transmitted, the electrical connections have to fulfil very specific requirements. In particular, the current and the voltage level are of decisive importance when selecting a suitable connector. The IP protection classes, which include the provisions for protection against foreign bodies, contact and water, also play an important role.

A large number of different connectors are required in a wide variety of industries and for the manufacture of countless products. The areas of industrial electronics, plant and mechanical engineering, automation, automotive and electrical engineering are particularly noteworthy. However, the solution-orientated use of connectors is also important in the fields of energy and environmental technology, medical technology, transport and traffic.

In order to fulfil the various requirements, different electrical connection technologies are used in the area of connectors. These include, for example

  • Printed circuit board connection technology
  • Soldering technology
  • Welding technology
  • Press-fit technology
  • Crimping technology
  • insulation displacement technology
  • Overmoulding

The most common connectors at a glance

  • Graphics/video connectors (VGA plug/socket • HDMI plug/socket • HDMI Micro • DVI plug • jack plug)
  • Serial, parallel and network connectors (D-SUB plug/socket • network plug and socket)
  • Waterproof connectors (M8 plug and alternatives • M12 plug)
  • Magnetic connectors
  • Modular connectors
  • Rectangular connectors
  • Motor connectors
  • High-voltage connectors
  • OBD2 connector
  • MC4 connector: this is mainly used in the solar industry in conjunction with photovoltaic connector systems
  • HSI (High Speed Implement Bus System)-Steckverbinder: findet vor allem in der Agrarindustrie und im Nutzfahrzeugbereich Anwendung
  • SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) connector: enables consistent, standardised communication of devices (can also be used as a retrofit)

What types of connectors are there?

    Printed circuit board connectors
    (wire-to-board, WtB connectors)

    Printed circuit board connectors
    (wire-to-board, WtB connectors)

PCB connectors are electronic components that are used to connect wires to a printed circuit board. Common industry standards include PCB, FPC and LVDS connectors.

Printed circuit board connectors (board-to-board, BtB connectors)

Printed circuit board connectors (board-to-board, BtB connectors)

So-called PCB connectors are required to connect PCBs together without cables. This connection is often achieved by brazing and is therefore permanent. These connectors often have integrated shielding for a higher data transmission rate. Subgroups of board-to-board connectors are backplane connectors and mezzanine connectors.

    Electrical plugs

    Electrical plugs

Input and output connectors (input/output, I/O), flange connectors, wire-to-wire connectors (WtW connectors) are electromechanical components that enable a connection between cables and wires to a fixed part, device or assembly. Industry standards for I/O connectors are D-Sub, USB, RJ45, metric connectors such as M12 connectors as well as MTA connectors.

    Coaxial plug connectors

    Coaxial plug connectors

Coaxial connectors, also known as high-performance connectors, enable a detachable connection between coaxial cables or high-frequency cables.

    High-voltage connectors

    High-voltage connectors

A high-voltage connector is an electrical connector that is specially designed for connecting high-voltage components or systems with an AC voltage of up to 1kV or a DC voltage of up to 1.5kV. Such connectors must be able to transmit high electrical voltages and currents and must therefore be well shielded, robust and reliable. High-voltage connectors are used in many areas, e.g. in electromobility, energy transmission and energy storage, as well as power distribution units.

    Optical plug connectors

    Optical plug connectors

Optical connectors are used to connect fibre optic cables (optical cables, fibre optic cables).

We cover all standards in the field of plug connections!

A large number of differently standardised connectors are used around the world. These include standards for the geometric shape of plugs, sockets, couplings and sockets as well as for the electrical or optical signal that is transmitted via cables or fibre optic cables and connectors. There are many different connector faces and designs, such as DIN 41 612, DIN 617, DIN circular connectors, HDMI, M5/M23 miniature circular connectors and many more.
