What began in 1975 with the processing of the first 3M™ Scotchflex™ IDC flat cables and connectors is now a story full of innovation, quality and trust. The decisive impetus came in the 1970s with the insulation displacement contact (IDC) technology developed by 3M.

This innovative connection technology was far ahead of its time: it eliminated the need for time-consuming stripping, soldering, crimping or screwing, and instead enabled fast, precise and gas-tight connections of up to 64 contacts in a single step. This made it possible to process entire ribbon cable assemblies reliably and cost-effectively – a revolution for the rapidly growing computer and electronics industry at the time. IDC set new standards for quality, efficiency and series production, becoming the key to the breakthrough of modern connection technology.

When 3M wanted to accelerate the introduction of this technology by manufacturing customised cable assemblies in Germany, they found the necessary expertise at CiS. CiS took over the production of these cable assemblies on behalf of 3M and at the same time became a 3M distributor. Joint marketing efforts in the field quickly led to success. What began with this first step developed over five decades into a partnership that continues to enable innovation to this day.
